Íslandsþari operates under a research and processing license that was issued by the Icelandic Ministry of Industries and Innovation on September 23, 2021, and is valid until December 31, 2027. The license is granted in accordance with law No. 79/1997 and with the approval of the Marine and Freshwater Research Institute (MFRI). The license covers the area from Vatnsnes in Húnaflói to Þistilfjörður in Northern Iceland.
The Icelandic Directorate of Fisheries is responsible for overseeing the research and has the right to place an observer on board any company vessel at the expense of Íslandsþari. During research and harvesting, important fish habitats including spawning areas must be protected, and Íslandsþari must consult with MFRI on this matter.
The research plan will be developed in close collaboration with the Marine Research Institute, who shall receive detailed information about the results. The results shall also be made public. In accordance with the license, Íslandsþari shall pay a fee to MRFI.
