Partners and benefactors

In collaboration with the University of Akureyri, Íslandsþari is working on development projects aimed at fully utilizing kelp and creating value from this important natural resource. The partnership also provides opportunities for student involvement in fields such as biotechnology, fisheries and business.

Matís is an Icelandic research and innovation company that focuses on the safety, quality, and sustainable utilization of food through scientific methods.

Matís has already played an important role in the chemical analysis of the kelp and will also participate in a new project funded by the Technology Development Fund for the years 2025–2027.

The Rannís Technology Development Fund is providing a grant to Íslandsþari to develop a new and sustainable method for extracting fucoidan from kelp. The project focuses on utilizing by-products and holds significant potential for value creation, new knowledge, and increased export revenues.

Sóknaráætlun Norðurlands eystra has supported Íslandsþari with grants for two innovation projects. The first project, carried out in 2024, focused on developing a production method for biostimulant. In 2025, the Sóknaráætlun provided funding for a project aimed at exploring the production and potential applications of fucoidan, a bioactive polysaccharide found in brown algae.
